  • Research summary

A number of adolescent and young adult patients are seen by child psychotherapy trainees and staff intensively on an ongoing basis at the Tavistock Clinic Specialist Adolescent and Adult Mental Health Service. The first part of this project will be based on an audit of the intensive work over the space of 3 years. I will describe the 17 cases who were seen intensively during that period, their initial presenting problems, their family backgrounds and previous treatments. This will outline who constitutes the patient group who takes part in intensive treatment.
In the second part of the project I will analyse the intake and assessment process. I will explore how cases enter treatment in the department. From describing the referral processes and an intake meeting observation I hope to draw conclusions on how decisions are taken. I also want to find out about the assessment process, how this takes place and on what basis recommendations for intensive treatment are made. The entry process into intensive work is not necessarily linear nor always the same. To this end I will interview the head of department as well as assessors and clinicians who take on the cases. I am interested in whether who performs the assessment might allow some prediction of process of the case.
The third part of the project aims to illustrate this process by using a case example from the audit. I will interview a former patient and their respective clinician on their experience of starting their intensive work at the department.
