Research summary
Burning mouth syndrome is a condition that affects approx 1% of the population. Patient focus groups suggest this condition is more than a burning pain and can include taste disturbance, dry mouth etc. This study aims to investigate which core outcomes burning mouth syndrome patients actually think are important to them in the measurement and assessment of their condition to allow future research studies to more accurately reflect patient needs. It will include patients as experts with lived experience of the condition, and experts in the diagnosis and treatment of the condition. Several rounds of surveys will be conducted to agree which questions should be asked, this will then feed into an international Delphi study to agree a core outcome set to use in research studies. The study is an international collaboration and will include patients from UK, Ireland and USA.
