Research summary
Type 2 diabetes is a major health concern and can contribute to heart disease and general ill health. Inflammation within cells appears to be important in causing the development of this condition. This research looks at the differences between markers of inflammation from people who are healthy, have pre-diabetes or have type 2 diabetes. The purpose of the research is to determine whether commercially available dairy colostrum taken as a food supplement can improve inflammation associated with the progression of type 2 diabetes, and whether there are any beneficial effects on bile acid and stomach damage. We will ask participants (healthy, pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes) to take a commercial dairy colostrum supplement (Neovite™) for 4 weeks alongside their normal diet. Scientific methods of analysis established in our laboratory will be used to examine inflammatory and intestinal damage markers. The project will enable us to: a) Test potential beneficial effects of colostrum in individuals with pre-diabetes/type 2 diabetes b) Develop an understanding of how colostrum might benefit the population through potential anti-inflammatory processes. Eventually the work may lead to a better understanding of what progresses pre-diabetes patients to develop type 2 diabetes. This might lead to newer treatments to prevent this conversion from occurring. The proposal has the support of the Diabetes Research Unit Cymru.
