  • Data collection arrangements

The Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth has an existing electronic hospital endoscopy reporting system (HICCS). Useful information such as patient demographics and colonoscopy findings are already stored on this platform however the clinical information is not easy to analyse in the current format.

Patient information that has been routinely collected and is already held in the hospital system will be transferred in an anonymised format to a custom-made colonoscopy outcomes database to allow for analysis of the historical data. There will be no collection of new data as there is enough data already held can be analysed.

The database will hold anonymised medical information for 23,837 colonoscopies in 18,489 patients, collected between 1st January 2010 to 8th November at Queen Alexandra hospital, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust (PHT) between . All data collected from patients over 18 years of age who underwent an endoscopy at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, including repeat colonoscopies performed for surveillance purposes, will be stored.

  • Research programme

The Portsmouth endoscopy department is a very busy and large referral centre with 140000 procedures performed annually. A wide range of procedures are performed which cater to 1% of the UK population. Portsmouth receives referrals from 32 other centres across the UK, which makes our data easily reproducible nationally. The clinical information currently held on our existing electronic hospital database is not easy to analyse in the current format. The main reason behind creating a custom made database is to keep routinely collected historical endoscopy data in single database that would enable the gastroenterology team to perform analyses to improve local services and patient outcomes. It will include information from endoscopy procedures and clinical outcomes. The research database will help to define clinical pathways to reduce the present burden of colonoscopy on the health care system.
