  • Research summary

Our research unit wants to increase the numbers of organs available to transplant into patients. We think this could be done by repairing damage to the organs before transplant, these repaired organs could last longer and perform better. The technique we use for repairing the organs is ‘machine perfusion’. There are different types of perfusions, we mainly use normothermic perfusion, in which the warmed, blood-based fluid passes through the organ. We wish to collect blood removed from patients during routine venesection to use in our perfusion work. This would enable us to expand our perfusion work to a model using whole blood. Patients undergo venesection at Freeman Hospital for a number of physiological reasons, typically about 200 mL of blood is removed and then disposed of via clinical waste. We propose to obtain permission from the patients to collect this blood and store it at Newcastle University for use in perfusion and related work.
