Research summary
Accurate assessment and diagnosis is important in planning and delivering appropriate treatment for patients with chronic wounds. Monitoring the progress of these wounds is therefore important in assessing the progress of the healing process. To enable accurate assessments to be made by the clinician there needs to be an accurate diagnosis of the type of wound and an understanding of the different factors delaying healing. Whether a chronic wound patient is seen weekly, monthly or at other intervals, it would be useful to have a tool at the point of care with which the patient, or less experienced non-healthcare professional carer, can check the wound and be alerted if it appears there are biomarkers or inflammation. They can then inform the clinician responsible for the wound. This pilot study consists of two parts in which a total of 200 wound exudate samples from patients with chronic wounds, i.e. wounds which do not show improvement despite optimal care for 6 weeks, will be remotely assessed in order to further the development of two such diagnostic devices.
