Research summary
The research question we ultimately wish to investigate is the concentration of inorganic metallic cations (i.e. calcium, magnesium, copper etc) in normal nasal mucous, prior to a later similar research project in patients with nasal disease. To study these concentrations we need to optimise the method of sampling nasal mucous in normal subjects without using dilution techniques (i.e. nasal washouts). This study will compare two different methods of passively absorbing nasal mucous onto an inert substrate.
We plan to use normal healthy volunteers. We will use two main methods of collecting mucous. One will use a dry pledget of cotton wool placed in the nose to absorb the mucous. The other will be the placement of a plastic splint into the nose onto which the mucous will attach. Once these substrates have been removed, they will be weighed, and the amount of mucous will be calculated.
