Data collection arrangements
Information essential to assess mother and baby during pregnancy is recorded routinely to monitor antenatal care, with mothers' informed consent.
To help recognise risk factors and improve patient safety in maternity care, the routinely collected data is anonymised and stored in a large, secure database from where specific studies can be undertaken to improve quality of care and prevention of adverse pregnancy outcome.
Research programme
The anonymised Research Database will contain important information from the majority of pregnancies in the National Health Service, looking mostly at how the baby's growth is monitored, how it can be improved to reduce stillbirths and adverse neonatal outcomes, and how to make the care of pregnancy as safe as possible.
