Research summary
The purpose of the study is to find out whether the treatment patients receive for head and neck cancer have any impact upon patients cognition (the underlying skills that allow us to think, remember and learn). Patients will undergo standard treatment in the form of chemo radiotherapy (intensity modulated therapy-IMRT) or radiotherapy (IMRT)alone. Much research has been completed in relation to the physical effects of treatment; however, our research will be investigating the psychological effects of this in the form of cognitive decline. This will be assessed via accredited verbal and written cognitive assessments administered by the psychological support team at baseline, 6, 12,18 and 24 months.
The assessments will take approximately 30 minutes in total. Via this study we hope to improve our knowledge of the effect of treatment on patients cognition and how clinicians can support current and future patients if an alteration in cognition is noted.
