Research summary
Up to 50% of people with autism are reported to experience anxiety, including social anxiety symptoms and there is little understanding of the relationship between these symptoms. Social anxiety is treatable and thought to be maintained by certain ways of perseverative thinking before, during and after social interaction. This study aims to see if there is a relationship between these ways of thinking and social anxiety symptoms in those with autism. This will help to understand if people with autism engage in similar cognitive processes associated with social anxiety. This may help guide treatment and consider the interaction between mental health and autism.
