  • Research summary

Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a group exercise and education programme, typically delivered twice a week over a 6 week period. The sessions are designed to provide individually tailored exercise and education in a small group setting. It is recognised as one of the most clinically and cost effective interventions in COPD, improving exercise capacity, quality of life and mood. Despite the numerous clear benefits of PR, some issues remain unclear.
    1) There is considerable variation in uptake, and adherence to PR
    2) Some of the benefits may not be sustained over the longer term in all individuals, in particular physical exercise and education.

We believe that cognitive ability is likely to play a key role in the adherence and outcome of PR, in particular education, but to date has received very little consideration. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) has been developed as a brief bedside self complete clinical tool which is sensitive and specific to cognitive impairment in COPD.

We propose to ask people attending PR to undertake the brief MoCA before and after PR to see if cognitive ability is related to adherence and outcomes in PR. We believe this exploratory study will inform the design of future PR programmes to respond to the cognitive needs of the individual.
