Research summary
Dizziness and vertigo are common problems for which people seek help from health care professionals. This research aims to develop the understanding of which patients are most and least likely to both experience and recover from their symptoms. Specifically, it aims to identify which cognitive and behavioural factors predict self-rated recovery versus persistence of dizziness, six-months after a standard assessment at an NHS vestibular clinic.
This research aims to assess the predictive power of cognitive behavioural factors at assessment, over and above any treatment intervention that the patients might receive, and aims to develop our knowledge about specific cognitive and behavioural predictors of persistent dizziness. This will inform the development of CBT models in this area and will also provide important information to inform clinical practice, such as which patients with dizziness may benefit from receiving some CBT-based intervention earlier on in treatment (something that is currently rarely available). This has clinical significance as the research findings might inform assessment and treatment for patients experiencing dizziness.
Participants will be asked to complete a set of questionnaires soon after attending an assessment appointment at an NHS vestibular clinic and a shorter set of questionnaires at a 6-month follow up point. Participants will be recruited by their assessing clinician (an NHS Clinical Scientist or an advanced audiologist). Eligibility will be determined by the recruiting clinical according to guidelines determined at the project design phase. Inclusion criteria includes sufficient English to understand and complete the questionnaires and aged over 18 years of age. Participants will be excluded if the clinician determines that the patient does not have rehabilitation potential.
