Research summary
This study aims to create a short, child-friendly video to help children with molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) and their families better understand the condition and the treatment options available to them. MIH is a common condition that affects the enamel of permanent molar and incisor teeth and can cause sensitivity, pain, and concerns about appearance. Families often report that existing information about MIH is confusing, inconsistent, or difficult for children to understand.
The research is important because children and parents have said they want clearer, more engaging information, particularly in video format. This study will involve children directly in developing the resource, ensuring it reflects what children themselves feel is helpful, reassuring, and easy to understand.
Children aged 6-15 years with MIH, and their parents or carers, will be invited to take part from the Paediatric Dentistry Department at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital in Sheffield. Participation will involve interviews and small group discussions to explore what information should be included in the video, how it should look and sound, and what should be avoided. Families will then review a draft version of the video and provide feedback before it is finalised.
Interviews and group discussions may take place face-to-face or online, depending on family preference. Audio recordings will be used to support accurate analysis, but no video recording will take place. Participation is voluntary.
The finished video will be checked against recognised health information quality standards and made freely available for use in dental clinics and online. The study is funded by a Faculty of Dental Surgery Royal College of Surgeons of England and British Society of Paediatric Dentistry pump-priming grant.
