  • Research summary

A large amount of information is currently collected within health and social care focusing on different areas of practice. This information, however, is mostly about counting the occurrence of incidences, which are often negative in nature e.g. number of patients who fall whilst in hospital or number of complaints. The desire to develop key performance indicators (KPIs) that would provide evidence of the unique contribution of nursing and midwifery to the quality of care provided to patients was the impetus that led to the original research underpinning this study. A unique set of person-centred nursing KPIs and a measurement framework, through which the KPIs are implemented, were developed from primary research. Over the last twelve months, an APP has been developed in partnership with the School of Computer Science, Ulster University to facilitate the collection of the measurement framework data. The APP is currently being tested in a feasibility study, funded by HSC R&D and it is envisaged that the APP will be available for use in this research project. Its use will ensure a more timely and efficient mechanism for collecting evidence of person–centred practice and help facilitate real time reporting. The focus of the research project outlined here is to improve the experience of patients undergoing chemotherapy through the promotion of person-centred practice. Whilst the project will focus on the implementation of the person-centred KPIs, it will also include a more explicit focus on the facilitation of person-centred practice underpinned by the principles of Practice Development. The study aims to build on previous pilot work undertaken in 2016 with the MacDermott Outpatient Unit, South Eastern HSC Trust which was also funded by Macmillan Cancer Support. The pilot project was the catalyst that led to a regional workshop to co-produce the key proposals set out within this document.
