Research summary
Obesity in children and young people is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. To tackle this issue NHS England has established specialist paediatric Complications from Excess Weight (CEW) services in the UK. Guidance suggests that strategies to increase physical activity (PA) should form central components of care for young people within CEW services. To address the need for specialist PA interventions within CEW services our research group developed a new exercise and PA intervention based on evidence and theory (MOTIVATE-CEW). Findings from an initial feasibility trial suggested the intervention was well received by patients and their parents, but there were concerns over maintenance of PA. Therefore our overall aim is to develop a second iteration of the MOTIVATE-CEW intervention for Alder Hey Childrens Hospital, and be ready to conduct a randomised controlled trial to investigate its feasibility.
To achieve our aim we will use a co-production process to develop a refined MOTIVATE-CEW intervention. The co-production process will include patients receiving care from the Alder Hey CEW service or on its waiting list, parents/guardians of patients and professionals with involvement in the Alder Hey CEW service or CEW services nationally. Two co-production groups will be formed, 1) young people and 2) adults. Both groups will then attend a series of co-design workshops. Workshops will aim to 1) understand the needs of patients and evaluate how the initial MOTIVATE-CEW intervention could be improved, 2) provide opportunity for stakeholders to critique the newly develop intervention and 3) develop an outcome set for the future randomised control trial. Multiple qualitative methods will be used to document the intervention development process and capture audio and visual data relevant to the research objectives.
