  • Research summary

This qualitative research is part of a PhD project exploring how patients experience the preoperative period while waiting for joint replacement surgery, and healthcare professionals’ perspectives on the delivery of prehabilitation programmes and other preoperative care support currently available. The study involves interviews with patients from NHS Tayside and NHS Highland to explore their needs, challenges, and engagement with prehabilitation and other types of preoperative support before surgery. Focus groups with healthcare professionals will explore their opinions on current practices and potential barriers to delivering prehabilitation or other preoperative support.

The findings from this phase (Work Package 2) will inform the next phase of the study (Work Package 3), which will focus on the co-design and development of a tailored support intervention. In this phase, a structured co-design workshop will be held with a small group of patients and healthcare professionals from WP2 who have consented to further involvement in the next phase WP3.

Initial WP2 findings will be summarised and presented to guide collaborative discussion. The specific format, content, and delivery method of the intervention will not be identified in advance, as they will be informed by the findings from WP2 and shaped collaboratively during the workshop.
