  • Research summary

Many patients are required to travel from distant locations to attend Consultant Out-Patient Department (OPD) appointments within an acute district hospital within NHS Highland. For example, patients may need to travel from Skye to Inverness (over 100 miles by road, taking on average 3 hours one way) for a 10 minute OPD appointment. Understandably patients are dissatisfied with this service.
NHS Highland have designed Near Me, which is a video technology platform to enable patients to have virtual consultations using a computer, smartphone or tablet via an internet connection. Near Me has been used as an alternative to travelling from a distant location to attend a brief OPD appointment in one area of NHS Highland with multiple specialities. This proposal aims to co-design the use of NHS Near Me with the people of Skye to enable remote consultant OPD appointments from people’s homes, or close to home.
All co-design approaches work with the theory that designing interventions with end users improves fidelity and implementation. People living in Skye who noted an interest at a public information session in participating in a future service evaluation will be contacted to ask if they would be interested in participating in the project. Interested individuals will be sent a Participant Information Sheet and consented prior to data collection. Participants will be asked to participate in firstly a two hour ideation workshop/focus group; secondly to test an aspect of the process and feedback via a one-to-one interview; and finally, participate in a process flow mapping exercise/focus group. Data collection will be January – April 2019 and will occur in community venues in Skye. The project will use NHS Near Me infrastructure and is funded by the Health Foundation.
