  • Research summary

This study explores how people regain arm function after a stroke by carefully measuring their upper limb movements. We will recruit up to 70 stroke survivors, as well as up to 30 healthy adults for robust comparison. Each person will wear small motion-tracking markers and a virtual reality headset, allowing us to record their arm movements while they perform everyday tasks such as reaching for an object.

Our goal is to capture detailed information about how the arm moves, rather than relying only on standard clinical tests. These standard tests are useful but may miss subtle differences in how people adapt or compensate after a stroke. By using advanced computer analysis of the motion-tracking data, we hope to identify distinct “movement patterns” or “phenotypes.” These patterns could help us understand whether someone’s progress is due to genuine recovery of muscle control or whether they have learned new ways of moving to work around their limitations.

All information we collect will be anonymized and securely stored. This research could eventually lead to more tailored rehabilitation strategies, as each person’s movement pattern may respond best to specific types of therapy. Ultimately, we aim to refine and improve the way clinicians assess and support stroke recovery, making it possible to offer more precise, targeted interventions for individuals with upper limb difficulties.

By gaining a clearer picture of how arm movements evolve over time, we hope to support people in achieving the best possible recovery and quality of life after a stroke.
