Research summary
Orthognathic surgery is used to correct significant jaw deformity and is carried out jointly by Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Orthodontists. One way that jaw deformity can be assessed is from a profile (side) view. This can then be used to guide a decision towards whether surgery is required. The average facial profiles of Caucasian and Chinese populations differ, with lower jaw prominence being a more acceptable feature in those with Chinese ethnicity. The study will look at the perceptions of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Orthodontists as to whether they feel that a series of profile photographs would require orthognathic surgery.
