Research summary
Point of Care (POC) technology offers a new approach to improving the physical health outcomes of people with severe mental illness.
An evaluation of cardiovascular screening, using POC blood tests, in patients with mental illness as part of a physical health check (CARMEN)is being conducted in adult mental health and Early Intervention in Psychosis teams of Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust in the South Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire areas.
However, alongside the main evaluation there is a need to explore the perceptions and experiences of clinicians using the HbA1c and Lipid POC tests and patients who receive them.
The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of clinicians who deliver the POC tests and the patients who receive them using semi-structured qualitative interviews.
Clinicians and patients will be asked for consent to pass on their details to a study researcher. Consenting clinicians and patients will be contacted and given more information about the study. If they are happy to proceed to interview, this will be scheduled at a time and location which is convenient to them. We aim to interview up to 25 clinicians and 25 patients.
We will use the interviews to describe clinician and patients perspectives on POC blood testing.
