  • Data collection arrangements

Patients attending the hospital for procedures will be approached by fully trained staff members in order to ask if they would like to participate in donating samples to the Clinical Research Facility Respiratory Biobank. The consent form will be accompanied by an information leaflet which will explain the details of the Biobank, and the purpose of collecting samples and data. If a patient grants consent for research, samples and data will be collected, the details of which will be recorded within secure Trust databases, access to which is restricted.

Samples will include: (i) blood; (ii) resected lung and related vasculature and nerves including lymph nodes and tumour tissue; and (iii) transplant tissue (recipient explant). Tissue and blood samples will be stored within the secure Trust Biobank laboratories prior to being transferred in pseudonymised form to a secure offsite facility run by Fisher Bioservices. Patient data will remain securely stored within secure Trust databases.

  • Research programme

Samples and data will be available to researchers from hospitals, academia and commercial industry who are conducting research into lung disease. The CRF Respiratory Biobank will provide samples and data to translational medical research projects in lung disease. The CRF Respiratory Biobank's main objective is to increase the rate at which clinically beneficial treatments are developed for patients with lung diseases. This will be done by: (i) increasing the availability of tissue for research; and (ii) bringing together leading scientists, clinicians and patient advocates to assess projects and prioritise studies. The CRF Respiratory Biobank will be publicised on the Trust website, which will have a range of useful information including details of the application process. The tissue bank will also be publicised in hospital newsletters, on funders' websites, through networking at scientific meetings and through acknowledgements on publications, presentations and posters.
