Research summary
Premature babies usually have problems breathing when they are born. These problems are treated with an effective medicine called surfactant. Several surfactants have been available for the past 20 years. However, there remain some unanswered questions about this medicine. Firstly, given the changes in other aspects of care for premature babies, what happens in the days after surfactant is given? We need to know this in order to decide the best way to test new surfactants. Secondly, does the dose of surfactant given straight after birth affect the outcomes?
We will answer these questions by looking back at routinely collected data in our Neonatal Unit.
