Research summary
Endocrine disorders are associated with a wide range of psychological symptoms that negatively affect quality of life and functioning. There is a paucity of research both on the prevalence of co-morbid psychological problems in this patient group and on response to psychological intervention for these difficulties.
This study will be divided into two parts, the first (part A) is to determine the prevalence and severity of psychological and related problems (anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain, impairment in functioning) amongst patients attending an endocrine clinic. All patients with an endocrine disorder attending clinic during a 3 month period will be invited to take part in a survey consisting of standardised questionnaires.
The second part (part B) is an evaluation the effectiveness of an embedded clinical health psychology clinic to the tertiary Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Endocrinology clinic. The clinic will emulate the design of routine clinical health psychology clinics provided within the Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and include assessment and treatment services using standard methods and approaches used within health psychology. Patients will be referred by members of the endocrine team. Standardised questionnaires will be administered to patients who attend the clinic at the start and end of clinic visits. Patients will be offered a maximum of fifteen appointments to take place over a 6 month period.
The data from the study will be published in a peer review journal, presented at professional conferences and used locally to guide service commissioning decisions.
