  • Research summary

Suicide is a major public health problem, approximately 45% of people who take their own life have contact with primary care in the month before suicide. Primary care is recognised in the English national suicide prevention strategy as an appropriate setting to develop suicide prevention interventions. However research studies highlight significant variability in GP awareness of suicide risk, willingness to explore suicide potential, and the way in which questions about suicide are phrased to patients. The aim of the proposed study is to develop and evaluate an electronic clinical decision support system to support GPs in consultations with potentially suicidal patients. In order to create the electronic clinical decision support system (e-CDSS), the study proposes to conduct interviews with GPs about their decision making process with regard to suicide risk, to convene a service user-advisory group to provide views on the phrasing of potential questions within the e-CDSS, to use co-production workshops with stakeholders to finalise content for the e-CDSS and to evaluate the initial prototype version of the e-CDSS in a GP practice.
