Research summary
It is hoped that all cases of the rare brain disease primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS) will participate in an observational study which will investigate the clinical features, imaging abnormalities and histological appearances (what is seen microscopically in a biopsy of the brain) of the disease. The study will be open to all patients with PACNS within the UK diagnosed after the study onset and the natural history and response to treatment will be assessed prospectively, then correlated with the imaging and histological data. The aim, therefore, is to define for the first time the prevalence of the disease, its immunopathology (what happens to brain when it is affected by the disease), the risk of impairment resulting from it and thence the optimum treatment for future patients.
