Data collection arrangements
The Clinical CMR Database will collect information from people who have already had a cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) scan at participating hospitals. These are University College London Hospital (UCLH) Cardiac Imaging Centre, Royal Free London, Imperial College Healthcare, Barts Health and Chenies Mews Imaging Centre.
Clinical teams at each hospital will identify eligible patients and collect relevant details such as age, sex, ethnicity, medical history, test results and heart scan findings. Only information that has already been recorded during normal clinical care will be used. All data will be anonymised before being added to the database so no names, NHS numbers or personal identifiers will be included. Each record will have a unique study code so that individuals cannot be identified.
The anonymised data will be stored securely on password protected NHS or university systems. Access will be limited to authorised researchers. The database will be managed and maintained by UCLH with oversight from each participating site through local NHS governance processes.Research programme
The Clinical CMR Database will support research using existing cardiac MRI scans and clinical data to improve the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. By combining anonymised information from several hospitals, researchers can study large and varied patient groups, including people with rare heart conditions. The database will help researchers explore how heart disease develops, how imaging techniques can be improved and how scan findings relate to long term outcomes. It will also encourage collaboration between hospitals and provide a shared resource to support future cardiovascular research. All research using the database will follow UK data protection laws and NHS governance standards. Findings will be shared through scientific journals and through plain language summaries for patients and the public. UCLH will act as the lead site to ensure the quality, security and sustainability of the database.
