  • Research summary

Applied behaviour analysis (ABA) involves the application of principles of behaviour to improve lives (both human and non-human). The scientific principles have been successfully used to teach skills, decrease undesired behaviours, and improve quality of life. Being a behaviour analyst means being a scientist-practitioner; clinical work is underpinned by a strong emphasis on objective data collection, and tailoring assessments and interventions to the needs of the client. As such, there is no ‘off-the-shelf’ method for addressing a particular behaviour, or working with a person with a specific diagnosis. This also means that research and clinical practice are more interwoven than in other areas of psychological practice. The purpose of the project is to evaluate the use of four common behavioural methods across a number of areas of clinical practice (e.g., people with learning disabilities, people with dementia), to generate a large dataset evaluating the use of behaviour analysis in the UK.
