Research summary
Many people with advanced cancer develop cancer that has spread to the bones (bone metastases). This can cause pain and reduce mobility and independence. Radiotherapy is commonly used to ease pain. Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is a highly targeted form of radiotherapy delivered over a small number of sessions. It may provide longer lasting control of the treated bone spot and improved pain relief for selected patients, but it is more complex to deliver and may carry specific risks, for example spinal bone fracture. UK evidence on its effects on pain medicines, quality of life and NHS costs is limited.
SBRT-BoneQoL is a prospective observational study in UK NHS radiotherapy centre. It will follow about 15 adults with solid cancers who have up to three bone metastases and are receiving SBRT as part of routine care, usually for a painful bone spot. The study does not change the radiotherapy a person receives. Participants will complete short questionnaires about pain and quality of life, and the research team will record pain medicines, side effects and scan results from medical records. No extra radiotherapy or scans are required solely for research. Information will be collected before SBRT and then around 6 to 8 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after treatment. NHS service use will also be recorded to estimate costs and value for money.
The main extra burden is time needed to complete questionnaires and possible upset when answering symptom questions. People can skip questions and can withdraw at any time without affecting their care. Data will be stored securely and analysed using a study number. Findings will support patient choice and inform a future larger study.REC name
