Research summary
Objectives:
To describe cleft team service provision at each of the 11 centralised cleft units across the UK and compare these findings to a previous study.
To compare team members’ perceptions of team-working within their cleft teams, with comparison to previous findings and establish whether self-reported team working is reflected in observation of multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings. Background:
Centralized cleft centres, recommended by the Clinical Standards Advisor Group in 2008, allow for care and treatment of patients with cleft lip/palate to be undertaken by a multidisciplinary team. Teams were previously surveyed (2010) for their service provision and individuals were studied for their perceptions of team working. At this time the multidisciplinary team was a relatively new concept within cleft care, eight years on we aim to establish whether service provision has been maintained and whether the team's functioning has changed. In 2015 Cleft Care UK published findings on the impact of reconfigured cleft care in the UK in regards to surgical outcomes, speech, hearing, aesthetics and psychological factors. With these data published it would now be appropriate to consider the service and teams that provide this care.Setting:
The 11 cleft units across the UK will be invited to participate. Participants will be those in attendance at MDT meetings, excluded are those only working at spoke sites and those not currently participating in MDTs.Materials / Methods:
Service provision will be assessed using a Cleft Team Questionnaire and Specialty Cleft Team Questionnaire. The MDT will be observed and an assessment tool completed. Individual team members will be invited to complete a Team Work Assessment Questionnaire and a Team Climate Inventory Questionnaire.
Results:
The findings of these investigations will be compared to previous studies and current Clinical Standards Advisory Group (CSAG) recommendations. Self-reported perceptions of team working will also be compared to findings of the observed MDT.
