Research summary
The aim of the study is to determine if a non-invasive continuous arterial pressure measurement system using a simple finger cuff to measure blood pressure with each heart beat (Clearsight), is accurate enough to replace the current invasive method of measuring blood pressure in patients having an operation on their carotid artery to restore blood flow (carotid endarterectomy).
Patients will be approached when they are admitted for a carotid endarterectomy. The anaesthetic, operation and main method of monitoring blood pressure during surgery will be exactly the same as for routine clinical practice. In addition, during the operation, participants will have their blood pressure measured using a second, non invasive method. The readings from the two methods of measuring blood pressure will then be compared.
