Research summary
This study is being conducted to determine if treatment of deep vein thrombosis with contemporary catheter directed therapy results in significant symptom reduction and the prevention of post thrombotic syndrome at 2 years in comparison to standard conservative therapy consisting of conventional anticoagulation and compression therapy. All participants will receive standard of care treatments of thrombolysis via a catheter, followed by venoplasty to expand the vein, with or without the insertion of a stent to maintain the patency of the vein, plus compression therapy and anticoagulation. Data collected will be compared to the best medical therapy arm of the ATTRACT trial (anticoagulation and compression therapy only).
A randomised clinical trial demonstrated that DVT patients who wear elastic compression stockings daily after proximal DVT showed no improvement in PTS, however a meta-analysis of 674 reports suggested that the current body of evidence was limited and at present there is equipoise and further study of compression stockings to prevent PTS is needed.
