Research summary
Following radiotherapy for cervical cancer, 20-50% of people will experience late effects, impacting physical health and quality of life. Treatments are getting better, and more people are being cured of cervical cancer. However, half of the people diagnosed are under the age of 45 and may live with late effects for many years. Late effects are a symptom or symptoms of radiotherapy present more than 90 days or three months after the completion of a course of radiotherapy. Late effects following treatment for cervical cancer include bowel and bladder problems including needing a toilet often and quickly, early menopause, sexual and body image issues. Patients can experience emotional issues and altered relationships with friends, partners and family members. The problems can be so severe that individuals are unable to work, and this can have a big impact on their income. Services to treat late effects of radiotherapy are set up to help patients to manage their symptoms and to improve patients’ quality of life but not everyone has access to these services. Also, many services are not specifically focussed to support patients with the late effects of cervical cancer and have not been developed in partnership with the patients who will be using them.
Therefore, we want to develop a dedicated late effects service that meets the needs of patients by understanding the priorities from people who have experienced them from radiotherapy for cervical cancer. We also want to get the views of staff who are involved in the care and support of patients who are experiencing the late effects of radiotherapy for cervical cancer.
To do this we aim to develop the service in partnership with patients and staff using a working together approach called co-design (designing something together with the people who will be using it)
