Data collection arrangements
Blood samples from cases of VCJD or those at risk of vCJD will be donated by source clinics where samples are collected under their own ethical consents. The samples are transferred to NIBSC where they are stored and tracked in secure facilities details are provided in the supporting document which outlines the management of bank. Sample receipt, storage and distribution is recorded using a database.
For the normal donor samples provided by the American Red Cross there is no identifiable information recorded-samples are provided with tube barcodes obscured and collection tubes are destroyed after blood samples are destroyed. These samples are covered by a generic consent for use of blood samples in research.
Research programme
The CJD RRC has secured NIHR funding to undertake studies which evaluate the ability of methods being developed as a way of diagnosing/identifying individuals who are incubating vCJD before the onset of clinical symptoms. The project (PR-R17-916-23007) entitled "Evaluation of candidate tests for pre-clinical detection of prion disease in blood" has funding until March 2022. This is an extension of previous funding in which tests were evaluated for their ability to detect vCJD clinical blood samples positive. The contract for this work is supplied for information. The work is subject to review every 6 months by a NIHR appointed research working group which includes researchers with an established expertise in vCJD diagnostics/test methods.
