  • Data collection arrangements

All the materials will be accessed from other archives or collaborating clinics; none will be taken by the bank. The activity is the transfer of samples from stored materials to the bank and the usage of the samples for assay evaluation by the bank.
    1. Samples of blood (plasma and cellular components or whole blood) from new cases of vCJD. These are likely to be extremely rare if current trends continue and will be taken by the Prion Unit in London according to protocols agreed before establishment of the bank was considered. Samples will not be taken for the sole purpose of lodging them with the bank.
    2. Samples of blood (plasma and cellular components or whole blood) from recipients of blood who are considered at specific risk of vCJD. These will be taken under the auspices of PHE and will be stored only with the bank.
    3. Samples of blood (plasma and cellular components or whole blood)from recipients of immunoglobulin prepared from UK plasma. These will be taken under the auspices of the Manchester immunodeficiency laboratory and are not taken with the sole purpose of lodging them with the bank.
    4. Samples of blood (plasma or cellular components or whole blood)stored at the request of relatives of patients prior to change of therapy or for other reasons.

Blood samples from cases of vCJD or those at risk of vCJD will be donated by source clinics under their own ethical consents. No personal data will be available to the bank.

Research programme/community supported by the bank: Developers of assays for vCJD world wide

  • Research programme

The activity involves independent assessment of assay methods and is research in so far as the data are fed back to the applicants who may modify their assay accordingly and the assays may be established at NIBSC to explore the variables involved. The data will be evaluated in the first instance by the Oversight Committee to determine the sensitivity and specifity of the assays. The bank provides a facility for access to samples and evaluation procedures world wide so it is not possible to define the organisations who will make applications
