Research summary
People with underlying (chronic) conditions/disabilities or from racialised groups often find it especially hard to access appropriate support, health and social care or vital needs, such as medicine and food (which we call resources). The pandemic has worsened their plight but pandemic recovery gives us an opportunity to improve this. To do so we need to understand the particular problems - and successes – they experienced and will experience as health and social care tries to return to normal.
We have surveyed 2,000 people in the community in the UK, but wish to recruit approximately the same number through NHS sites. We are comparing racialised groups and white British, and those with/without disability in the survey, which we will repeat twice more in 2022. We will consider how everyone is affected differently by the pandemic, according to the intersection (interplay) of factors such as citizenship, age, gender, where they live, their work, and health or disability issues.
We have also interviewed over 215 people from diverse regions about the same topics and wish to recruit another 70 through NHS sites. Our interviewees will be invited to two workshops (in early and mid 2022) to discuss findings and compare them with the extant situation.
We will report changes over time in and design health/care delivery solutions. With lay people we will co-produce outputs for immediate, relevant and useful change in health and care service delivery in the UK.REC name
