Research summary
Systolic heart failure (SHF) is the inability of the heart to pump a sufficient amount of blood to the organs, resulting in symptoms of breathlessness, lethargy, reduced exercise tolerance and reduced life expectancy. In the UK, over 7000 cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices are implanted each year in symptomatic patients with SHF established on optimal medical therapy. However, in up to 40% of patients, this intervention does not result in further symptomatic benefit. Determining ‘non-responders’ would be beneficial both economically but also by not exposing these patients to procedural risks. This study will measure blood biomarkers of heart function in SHF patients undergoing CRT and over the subsequent 6 months to enable us to identify specific ‘signatures’ that may identify this group. Such a tool does not yet exist which would aid in the better identification of patients that would benefit from this intervention, improving their symptoms and clinical outcomes.
