Research summary
This study will be conducted as a stand-alone project funded by the Music Therapy Charity and sponsored by Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL). CHORD consists of three phases: 1) CHORD manual development, 2) Feasibility study to evaluate CHORD manual, and 3) Refinement of CHORD manual. CHORD Manual development will involve a literature review and consultations with music therapy clinicians and researchers to identify key components to deliver a replicable evidence-based singing intervention for people with dementia and their carers. To evaluate CHORD manual in a clinical setting, a music therapist will run a weekly singing group for people with dementia and their family members using the manual for three months. Up to twenty-four participants (service users and their families) will be recruited from CNWL Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster Memory Service. The participants will complete questionnaires and assessment forms at the beginning and at the end of the singing intervention. They will be invited to attend a focus group to feedback their experiences of the singing group. Feedback from the participants and the music therapist will be incorporated into the refinement of the manual. Hard copies of the CHORD manual will be produced at the end of this study. It is agreed that a PhD student based at the University of Nottingham will evaluate the CHORD manual further in a randomised controlled trial. This will be conducted as a separate study and a new protocol will be developed for the RCT.
