Research summary
The identification of brown adipose tissue in adult humans has highlighted the possibility of activating this tissue as a novel treatment for metabolic disease. However, little is known about the regulation of this tissue. We will recruit 6 healthy men who will undergo positron emission tomography (PET)/ magnetic resonance imaging of their brown adipose tissue using 18flurodeoxyglucose following mild cold exposure. Subjects will attend on two separate occasions where they will receive a second novel PET tracer during 1) warm and 2) cold exposure to determine whether this tracer can be used as a novel method of identifying brown adipose tissue and improve our understanding of human brown adipose tissue physiology.
