Research summary
First adult molar teeth come into a child’s mouth at age 6. Unfortunately, dental diseases can cause this tooth to break down. At this point, this tooth is compromised. The two main options are to fill the tooth or to remove it. The correct time to make this decision is around 9. However, the best option is not known, and any decision should be based on what patient and parents prefer. Usually, parents will make decisions for children; however, it is clear that young people want to be involved in decision-making and have their views and opinions heard.
Previous research with children aged 12 to 16 have shown what factors are important to this age group when making these decisions. Unfortunately, these children are beyond the ideal time required to decide whether to remove or fill these teeth. Asking children aged 6-12 would provide a different perspective. The aim of this study is to see how children aged 6-12 would want to manage these teeth, and the reasons behind this.
