Research summary
The purpose of this research is to explore the narratives of children about their experiences of hospitalisation and hospital school. The research study will focus on children’s recollection of key events during the hospitalisation period, including their attendance at hospital school. The term ‘hospital school’ in this research study refers to an educational setting in which children and young people receive education whilst they are in hospital or unable to attend mainstream schools due to their medical conditions. Children receive teaching either on the wards or in one of the designated classrooms.
Expected outcomes
The research study will illuminate narratives of children who have experienced hospitalisation and attendance at hospital school. In doing so, the research will provide opportunities for improved professional practice at the hospital school and for professionals working with these children and their families, for example mainstream school staff and Educational Psychologists. Furthermore, findings could be shared with other hospital schools in the UK. This will ultimately improve outcomes for children in hospital who receive education from hospital schools.REC name
