  • Research summary

There is strong evidence that children who are poorly prepared/informed about health procedures (X-rays, blood tests, MRI, examinations) experience increased anxiety leading to poorer health outcomes (Jaaniste et al 2007, Duff et al 2012). Currently children are educated about health procedures through leaflets, DVDs, books, models and online information; often these materials are aimed at parents and are not child-friendly. Current technologies targeted at children (e.g. wayfinding, storybook & feedback apps) are hospital specific, focussed on distraction and do not provide education on specific health procedures. Corporation Pop Ltd in collaboration with Edge Hill University will develop a Patient’s Virtual Guide (PVG): a healthcare app using 3D Augmented Reality (AR) to improve a child’s understanding and knowledge of health interventions and increase their health literacy. The proposed work submitted within this application looks to gain knowledge from children, parents and health professionals to inform the development of the PVG. Phase 2 (which will be submitted as a separate application) will then evaluate the PVG in practice.
