Research summary
An increasing number of children under 16 years of age are attending urgent and emergency care facilities in the UK. Clinicians working in those facilities must make complex judgments about whether their patients can be sent home safely; or require further assessment or admission to hospital. It is routine practice for children to have non-invasive measurements performed by nurses in emergency care settings. These measurements include checking the child's temperature, heart rate, breathing rate and the amount of oxygen in the blood. There is a range of normal values for each of these measurements, which vary according to the age of the child. However, different hospitals use different ranges of normal values, as there is no agreed standardised range of normal values across the NHS. This research project will enable us to make recommendations for a standard way to know whether measurements are normal or not. We will also investigate the link between temperature and heart rate and breathing rate.
