Research summary
Background- Many children experience health care interactions in healthcare procedures to varying degrees during their childhoods. There is a lack of evidence of how children communicate during procedures especially how they communicate assent (yes) and dissent (no.) There is also a lack of clear, coherent guidance for health care professionals on what to do if a child in their care dissents for a procedure which needs to take place.
Aim of the study - To explore the different ways children verbally and non-verbally communicate assent and dissent during a clinical procedure
Design - The study will be qualitative and will use non-participant observations of routine radiological procedures with children (aged 4-11 years) (n=45), their parents (n=45) and health professionals (n=10) at the radiology department in Alder Hey Children's NHSFT. Children will then be invited to take part in a face-to-face interview (15 minutes) at the hospital, on the same day as their procedure, and their parents invited to participate in a face-to-face interview or a telephone interview either within the department before they leave or via the telephone within 14 days of their child's radiological procedure at a later date (15 minutes).REC name
