Research summary
Relative to their peers, children with learning disabilities are at increased risk of developing behaviours that challenge (such as aggression or self-injury) from a young age. Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) is considered a framework of best practice to support such children in health, educational and social care contexts. This framework aims to better meet the needs and preferences of children and families through increasing quality of life which as a consequence also reduces the risk of behaviour that challenges. However, little PBS research has explored the interplay of these kind of goals and outcomes from the perspectives of children and families. This study will interview 15 family carers and children who have a learning disability and history of displaying behaviours that challenge and are awaiting input from support services. A range of methods will be used to adapt interview to meet the communication needs of children with disabilities. Interviews concern the impact of behaviour that challenges and the identification of desirable future goals relating to a range of life domains. Interviews will be analysed using a Framework Approach to identify themes that may usefully inform future systems of support for children and families in relation to behaviour that challenges.
