Research summary
CHEETAH is an international, multicentre, 2-arm, cluster randomised trial with an internal pilot to evaluate the use of separate sterile instruments for wound closure to reduce surgical site infection (SSI) rates in patients undergoing surgery with an abdominal incision.
The primary outcome is to assess whether the practice of separate, sterile gloves and instruments can reduce SSI at 30-days post-surgery for patients undergoing clean-contaminated, contaminated or dirty abdominal surgery compared to current routine hospital practice.
Participants will be recruited from hospitals in High Income Countries (HICs). HICs are those that do not appear on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development`s Official Development Assistancee (ODA) list
Patients with an abdominal incision that is at least 5cms will be included
Patients aged 16 years and over on the day of surgery will be included
