Research summary
This application is for a 5 year programme of research funded by the National Institute for Health Research. A previous phase of the programme was conducted in community pharmacies (REC No: 17/YH/0406; 19/SW/0082), but recent changes to the NHS mean that medicine review services will mainly be delivered by clinical pharmacists in general practices, which are now organised into Primary Care Networks (PCNs). With the agreement of NIHR, we have adapted the original programme aims and objectives to this new setting. Working with pharmacists and patients, the researchers want to find a way of discussing alcohol consumption in the new structured medication review (SMR) that comes into practice in April 2020. We will examine how the SMR is implemented, how new clinical pharmacists recruited to PCNs develop their new role, and work with patients and pharmacists to refine our intervention for discussing alcohol in medicine reviews.
In this study, interviews will be conducted with patients about their experience of SMRs and views on the inclusion of alcohol. This work will take 8 months to complete and be undertaken in PCNs in Yorkshire and the North East.
