  • Research summary

Frail older people unable to exercise when standing may be encouraged to carry out chair based exercises (CBE). A review of evidence for CBE found little consensus on their composition and potential benefits. Establishing a consensus of the views of clinical experts has identified the clinical components of CBE programmes. The chair based exercise programme has been developed based on the best available evidence about the responses of frail older people to exercise. It now needs to be tested in a proof of concept study to establish if it can demonstrate changes in muscle strength and function and if it is acceptable to patients.
