  • Research summary

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a serious, life-limiting inherited disease which primarily affects the lungs and gut. This means that sufferers are required to do a large amount of time consuming and often complex treatments each day. Managing CF requires patients to attend a specialist centre to receive treatments and get support, this is particularly difficult for patients attending the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (RD&E) as they often live far away and are required to travel which can be time consuming and expensive. The feasibility study will answer the research question “Is the management of Cystic Fibrosis improved by the use of online video calling to engage patients? A feasibility study using exercise as a model.” The information provided from this study will inform a larger study to determine the clinical significance and cost-effectiveness of enhancing engagement in various CF treatments facilitated via video calling.
We will ask nine participants to take part in an individualised exercise programme using video calling for 8-weeks. During the eight weeks, patients will be asked to participate in supervised exercise sessions using video calling and unsupervised exercise recorded using a diary or accelerometer. During this time we are interested in how patients engage with the CF team and what they think of the procedures and the intervention.
