Research summary
Adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) are now living much longer thanks to new treatments. As people with CF live longer, questions are emerging about longer-term health, including heart and metabolic health. However, we do not yet fully understand cardiovascular health in adults with CF or how lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, sleep and body composition may affect future health.
This study aims to describe heart health in adults with CF attending their routine annual review at the Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre. We will use a recognised scoring system called “Life’s Essential 8”, which combines information about diet, exercise, sleep, smoking, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.
This is an observational study and will not change participants’ usual care. Most information will come from measurements and tests already carried out as part of their routine annual review. In addition, participants will be asked to complete short questionnaires, wear a wrist activity monitor for one week, and record their food and drink in a 4-day diary at home.
The findings will help us better understand current health patterns and inform future diet and lifestyle support to help adults with CF stay healthy as they age.
