Research summary
Atrial fibrillation is associated with substantial risk of severe stroke, cognitive decline and dementia. Research is required to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and to develop effective countermeasures. We have recently identified vascular damage/dysfunction in atrial fibrillation, indicated by plasma biomarkers and impairments in conduit (brachial) artery function. However, it is unknown whether AF patients exhibit potentially pathogenic impairments in cerebral vasomotor regulation. As such, the objective of this application is to determine whether cerebral vasomotor regulation is impaired in atrial fibrillation. These investigations will provide important new mechanistic insights into cerebral vasomotor regulation in atrial fibrillation and pave the way for future studies examining the efficacy of measures targeting improvements in systemic and cerebral vascular health in atrial fibrillation.
